Which bronze or nickel-plated copper is better for carrying current?

2026-08-03 · Technical Articles

As the development of new energy sources advances, the requirements for high-voltage and high-current applications are becoming increasingly stringent. The surface treatment of copper bars for high-current applications is particularly critical in enhancing product life and stability. Today, we focus on why we recommend nickel plating over tin plating:

**Advantages of Nickel Plating**

- **Enhanced Corrosion Resistance**: The nickel layer on the surface of nickel-plated copper bars performs exceptionally well in humid environments and salt spray conditions. It can withstand oxidation for extended periods, significantly extending the life of the copper bars. In contrast, tin plating offers only short-term protection; it oxidizes easily in high-temperature and high-humidity environments, leading to an increase in contact resistance.

- **Higher Mechanical Strength and Wear Resistance**: The nickel layer has a higher hardness, making it suitable for applications with frequent operation and high friction. The tin layer is softer and more prone to wear, making it unsuitable for long-term high-current applications. While nickel plating improves durability, it also ensures current stability.

- **Strong High-Temperature Stability**: Nickel-plated copper bars perform exceptionally well under high-temperature conditions, eliminating the risk of tin filaments growing. Tin plating tends to diffuse
